Being a social worker entails a great deal of care and responsibility. Standard Social Worker Requirements
Social workers must possess good communication skills since they will be working with a variety of people of different ages and socioeconomic levels. One of the most important factors in being a social worker is having the emotional stability and maturity to deal with the varying child and family issues, which range dramatically. Educational Social Worker Requirements
Since social work positions are state-run programs, the educational social worker requirements tend to differ from state to state. The same goes for the type of salary a social worker can earn, regardless of educational level or accomplishment. Yet there are some standard educational requirements that stretch into all states.
All states require their social workers to have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. Some of the majors may range, but a concentration in a field close to social work is desirable. Degrees in the field of psychology, sociology and even criminal justice can give a candidate an upper hand when applying to be a social worker. A bachelor’s in social work (BSW) is not always required, though it is preferable since the courses taken deal directly with the field work.
Some states are beginning to require a master’s of social work (MSW). However, this is not always the case and an MSW is most often needed for higher level positions and to work directly with families. Holding only a bachelor’s degree typically only gets a person an entry-level position in the field.
